New Opportunity for Local Dancers!

Nationally Accredited Dance Qualifications are now available to Canberra and Queanbeyan dancers for the first time as Bom Funk Dance studio partners with a Registered Trading Office, Empowerdance Pty Ltd (RTO: 40397), based in Adelaide.

The partnership will provide local dancers with career development opportunities and genuine career pathways in Dance that have not been possible to obtain in the Capital before.

In 2018, Bom Funk Dance Studio will be offering Certificate II and III in Dance with the hope that eventually a full-time Certificate IV in Dance will also be possible to obtain locally.

Students who wish to pursue Dance as a career, particularly commercial dance, whether it be as a professional dancer, teacher or choreographer, have until now had to move to other states to pursue National Dance Qualifications. We have a shortage of qualified Dance teachers and professional Dance artists in Canberra and yet the most dance studios per capita in Australia. Students graduate year 12 and have to move away to complete courses or find professional dance work.

As a studio owner & local high school teacher, I believe that providing educational opportunities to dancers will only benefit them for their future, even if they choose a different pursuit long term. Employers are very aware of the amazing skills that dancers can bring to the workforce, including team work, creativity, commitment, time management, organisation, communication skills; all of which will are honed and reinforced through completing a Cert II or III in Dance.

The course outcomes include understanding safe dance practices & the Creative Arts Industry, the language of movement, dance styles, teaching methods, behaviour types and learning styles and working in a team to create projects from start to finish, learning to take responsibility and seek feedback.

There are so many benefits to this Program which is why we are so excited to be the first and currently only place in Canberra to offer these accreditations! The program features a flexible learning and delivery plan with intensive blocks held in the ACT School holidays. The intensives are designed to give the students total immersion and a hands on experience that will imprint technique theory and concentrated dance knowledge, packaged with a heap of fun, to enhance choreographic skills and confidence in the dance arena.

Students continue to train at their own dance studio and schools and have their classes signed off by their teachers to count towards their dance hours for the certificates. Many dancers are spending hours each week in their dance classrooms so it makes sense to make this time count towards a Nationally Accredited Certification.

The students only attend our studio for the Intensive blocks which focus on completing the theory parts of the assessment. It is really important that other studio owners and teachers understand that our aim is to provide further Educational opportunities to local dancers and we have a strict no poaching policy in place.

As a Nationally recognised qualification, students may also speak with their Guidance Councillor on whether they can apply for credit points for their ACT or NSW Senior Secondary Certificate through their school.

Guest Educators and Arts Professionals from Australia-wise will be booked to attend the Intensives with choreographer and triple treat leading Musical Theatre star, Kurt Phelan and former Moulin Rouge Principal dancer, now practicing Sydney Physiotherapist & Pilates Instructor, Julia Bruce already booked to join the Guest Faculty in 2018.

I believe these courses will be a fantastic addition to any dancer’s portfolio, whether they wish to pursue a career in the Arts or just love to dance.

Bom Funk Dance Studio will be holding an Information Day on Saturday 11th November between 3-5pm at their Jerrabomberra studio and special offers will be available to those who attend.

Ms Gabrielle Robinson, Director of Empowerdance Pty Ltd is travelling from Adelaide to assist and answer questions people may have about the qualifications.
