Performance Opportunities

At Bom Funk, our students learn and grow through performances. We have competitive team & recreational classes for students with optional exams & additional performance opportunities such as our EOY showcases, community events & overseas tours. Kix Arts productions & our nationally accredited courses provide professional pathways for those wishing to pursue dance as a career.

Our End-of-year performances involve all the extravagance that theatre performances have, including professional lighting & costumes. Participation is optional but most of our students take part because it is so much fun! If students choose to participate, attendance at the tech/dress rehearsal is also compulsory. At Bom Funk, we pride ourselves on producing high-quality productions with excellent organisation. Simple step-by-step instructions are provided as we near performances so that you are well prepared and can stress-less!

+ Which End-of-year Showcase is my child in?

Students in Dance Kingdom classes are in the Dance Kingdom Showcase (except Baby Bees & Tumble Tigers).

Students in Years 1-2 classes + Special Needs class are in the Junior Showcase.

Cheer Students will have their own Showcase.

Students in Years 3 classes and above are generally in the Main studio showcase.

Triple Threat & Adult performance classes will perform in their own showcases at our Highlight Theatrette.

+ My dancer is not able to perform at Showcase, what do I do?

It is VITAL we know if you are not intending to bring your dancer. Dance is a team sport.
If you or your dancer is unable to participate in their class performance at one of our End-of-Year Showcases, please complete the non-participation form by the given deadline (form available when Showcase information is released)

Completing this form is the only way we will accept notification. Without completing this, you will be charged and expected to pay for the Showcase Participation Package fee. We must be notified by FRIDAY 30 AUG. Fees will apply if we are advised after this date. Our students work towards their End-of-year performance for 2 terms which includes spacing and often with partners and group positions. It can put a lot of unnecessary pressure on students to have to change their position or partner the week before or day of the performance. Please remember that each class operates as a team!

+ Are there extra rehearsals?

Yes, but only one (and it's usually on the performance day). We limit rehearsals as much as possible for our families!

There is a tech rehearsal for all Showcase dancers at the venue. Students who miss the technical rehearsal WILL NOT be allowed to perform in the show. This is due to safety rules of the venue. There is no additional cost for theatre rehearsals.

+ Where are the Showcases held?

Our End-of-year Main, Dance Kingdom, Cheer & Junior Showcases are held at Erindale Theatre.

Midyear Mini Shows, Adult performance classes and Triple Threat classes will perform at our Highlight Theatrette.

+ What are the Showcase and rehearsal dates for 2024?

These times will be added once available.

+ What is the cost for dancers to participate?

In 2023 each dancer was charged a $65 Production Package. 2024 Package rates will be confirmed when Showcase information is finalised. Our Production package provides incredible value. Each participant will receive:

  • professional portrait photos taken in a studio setting (individual),
  • professional action photos taken during the show,
  • a digital copy of their Showcase professionally filmed as a download,
  • red carpet awards where they will be presented with a participation medal,
  • PLUS a surprise Carnival treat to take home after the show!
  • If a dancer is in more than one show, they will only be charged for one Production Package.
There are NO costume fees charged for our Showcases. This is a saving of at least $85+ per dancer/routine.

+ What other costs are involved?

There are NO costume hire fees charged for our End-of-year Showcases. The only other cost is tickets for friends and family who wish to attend and watch the show. Dancers do not need a ticket as they will remain backstage for the entire show so that they can walk the red carpet at the end.

+ How do we buy tickets?

Tickets will be available to purchase online once they open.

+ Does my dancer need a ticket?

No. Your dancer will be backstage during the show.

+ Does my dancer need to wear make up?

Make up is optional but we do encourage a bit of make up especially as dancers get older, so that their face can be seen under the lights for stage performances. Students in Dance Kingdom & Junior classes can wear a light variation should they wish.

  • Students are recommended to apply powder so face doesn't look washed out under the lights,
  • a Small amount of mascara. Brown eye shadow optional.
  • Red lipstick or pink gloss on lips.

Students in the Main Showcase are recommended to wear brighter stage makeup unless they have an allergy (please speak to us if this is the case and you need help finding products). Stage makeup counteracts the strong theatre lights that can wash out faces.

Bom Funk has a VIP partnership with Priceline in Queanbeyan - Let them know you are from Bom Funk and they'll show you what to get & apply 10% discount when items are not already on sale. We also stock make up packs in our Boutique so you can get all your main supplies in one easy purchase.

+ When should my dancer be there?

You should plan to arrive and check in your dancer at least 20 minutes prior to their scheduled rehearsal time. This allows you time to sign them in and find where they need to be. Check the full day & rehearsal schedule closer to the date.

+ Can I retrieve my dancer from backstage after he or she has performed?

For the safety and security of all dancers, all dancers must remain backstage until the end of the show. The only exception is the Special Needs Class. Parents may not enter backstage at other times to check out dancers.

+ How will my dancer change costumes if I'm not backstage?

It’s part of the magic of the show! We have many approved volunteers and teachers (all with WWCC) who help to make sure all young dancers are changed and ready for their performance. You can help us out by making sure all pieces of your dancer's costume are labelled with his or her name. Please pack a Dance Kit so our volunteers can help them.

+ What should we pack?

Please check our recommended packing list HERE.

+ Who does the hair/makeup?

You do! We do not do each dancer's hair & makeup but we do provide detailed videos and photo tips closer to the performance. We keep hair styles and makeup very simple.

We do not expect it to be perfect. Practising hair & make up prior to performance is a great opportunity to bond with your child. If you practice a few times and still get stuck, please add a post into your child's BAND classroom to find someone who can help - we have lots of parents and senior students who can assist but only if arranged prior to the performance. You can also purchase some make up & hair supplies from our Boutique pending stock.

+ Can I be backstage?

For the safety and security of all dancers, only staff and approved volunteers with WWCC clearance may be backstage during the show and rehearsals - the number of adults backstage is limited. All volunteers and staff are required to have Working with Children checks.

+ Can I buy dance supplies on the performance day? Or where can I buy them?

We advise parents to purchase all necessary costume pieces prior to the day of the event. We don't usually have time on the day of the Showcase to sell dance items. You will receive a costume document which details what the studio is providing and what you need to provide (usually underwear, sometimes black leggings/pants & shoes only).

Visit the Bom Funk Boutique in person or on-line to purchase stockings, briefs, body stockings, costume bags etc prior to the performances. Stock is limited.

+ My dancer usually attends classes when a rehearsal is scheduled, what happens?

Please note that no classes will be held at the studio on Friday 22d November and Saturday 23rd November. The technical rehearsals at the Theatre are held in replacement of these classes. Students in non-performance classes (acro/aerial) will be offered a replacement workshop at Bom Funk (details closer to the time).

+ Is there food at the venue?

Yes! We usually run a canteen during the break and before and after the show.

Students may also bring their own packed snacks. Students will not be allowed to leave the venue to visit food nearby without a consenting parent.

No food can be consumed in the backstage/dressing rooms or Theatre auditoriums as per the venue hire requirements. Food must only be eaten in the foyer or Green Room.

+ What is your refund policy if a Show is cancelled?

Please see the T&Cs of each show as this may change depending on Government restrictions at the time.

There will be no refund for change of mind or non-attendance on the performance day.

 Examinations

At Bom Funk we offer A.T.O.D (Australian Teachers of Dancing) syllabus classes in ballet, jazz and tap. Students looking to reach a higher level of technical training in these styles are invited to sit exams as a participant or examination candidate. Examinations are not compulsory at Bom Funk but highly encouraged for technique acquisition and development.

WHY SHOULD YOU CONSIDER EXAMINATIONS FOR YOUR CHILD?

The Australian Teachers of Dancing (A.T.O.D.) is a highly reputed dance organisation with members worldwide. They are leaders in the field of dance education and provide an exciting, vibrant, professional and educational environment for dance studios. Examinations with A.T.O.D. have a wonderful reputation for being an exciting and rewarding experience for students. Examinations are conducted in a group situation and the Examiner is professional, encouraging and friendly.

The word ‘exam’ can sound scary or have a negative connotation at times. One of the reasons we chose to go with A.T.O.D was because of the relaxed and supportive atmosphere their exams encourage. They offer an option to sit an exam as a participant or as an examination candidate.

Participant candidates will receive feedback, their certificate and medal but are not given a grade or mark. They cannot be 'failed.'

Examination candidates will receive feedback, their certificate and medal and a grade or mark for each exercise performed.  If examination candidates feel they are not ready on the day they can be swapped to a participant candidate prior to entering the exam room.

BENEFITS TO CHILDREN PARTICIPATING IN EXAMINATIONS

 The Examination –

  • provides an opportunity for students to be introduced to the examination procedure in a relaxed and familiar environment;

  • provides the students with a medal and written report with positive and technical comments to assist with ongoing training;

  • provides an opportunity for student’s to build self-esteem and a sense of achievement;

  • gives the student’s family and teacher/s the opportunity to build confidence by congratulating the students on how wonderful they are!

Exam day process:

Both participant and examination students enter the examination room in a relaxed yet disciplined manner in small groups. The exam consists of both a practical and theory component.  The practical component is a series of exercises. These are exercises they have been practising in class. In the theory component the students will be asked a number of questions based on the theory booklet (Bronze-Gold Ballet & Tap only). More information on this is included under the Theory section below.

In the junior grades, exercises are seen altogether as a group, in pairs or line by line (with the exception of tap where some are performed one at a time so sounds can be heard) and dances are seen in pairs. All results are confidential and it’s up to the candidate if they want to share their marks with others or not.

In the exam, students are able to repeat an exercise if they feel they did not perform it at their best. The examiners provide positive and constructive comments that will help students grow (we can tell them the same corrections but they only seem to listen when it comes from a guest judge – can you relate parents?!).

Studies show that children who participate in dance examinations each year gain confidence and learn important life skills such as learning to concentrate in an examination environment which assists with their school examinations and other similar situations. Participating in examinations also gives them a goal to work towards and an opportunity to receive an independent assessment of how they are progressing technically. The higher levels can also lead to examinations for Teaching Diplomas and some high schools may allow examination results to be included as part of their studies (please speak with your school as each school is different – we can provide you with information to assist).

A.T.O.D. prides itself on keeping examination fees to a realistic and affordable level with families in mind. On passing the examination, students receive an examination report/certificate and a medal from A.T.O.D.

We would like to encourage you to allow your child to join the growing number of students who learn, perform and excel within the A.T.O.D. system of training.

Exam results:

Dates:

A.T.O.D exams in Canberra are usually held in July/August.

These may change depending on the number of students we have sit an exam and on the Examiner's schedule. Students may need to take a short amount of time off school if exams are held on a weekday. Schools are very supportive and understanding of this. Exams usually run for approximately 20-40min depending on the number of students in the group.

Examination FAQS

+ MY CHILD DOES A SYLLABUS CLASS - DO THEY HAVE TO DO AN EXAM?

No, it is not compulsory for students to sit exams, but it is highly encouraged.

Our Tap, Jazz & Ballet classes learn from the A.T.O.D (Australian Teachers of Dance) syllabus. Examinations with A.T.O.D. have a wonderful reputation for being an exciting and rewarding experience for students. Examinations are conducted in a group situation and the Examiner is professional, encouraging and friendly. Reports show that children who participate in examinations each year gain confidence and learn important life skills such as learning to concentrate in an examination environment which assists with their school examinations and other similar situations. Participating in exams also gives them a goal to work towards and an opportunity to receive an independent assessment of how they are progressing technically.

+ HOW DO I KNOW IF MY CHILD IS READY?

Your child’s teacher is qualified to make that judgment. If a student has not reached a certain technical level, has a learning disability or perhaps has not been learning very long, the student may be entered as a participant.

+ WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ENTERING AN EXAMINATION AS A CANDIDATE AS OPPOSED TO ENTERING AS A PARTICIPANT?

An examination entrant will receive a grade - Pass or Unsuccessful based on their work together with marks for each exercise. Please note that statistically more than 99.9% of candidates pass their examinations. A participant receives a written report and a medallion without grades or marks for each exercise.

+ I DON’T WISH MY CHILD’S SUCCESS TO BE COMPARED TO OTHER CHILDREN IN THE CLASS.

All reports are private and confidential and it is at your discretion if you wish to share your child’s report with others. All students who successfully attain the required standard all receive a Pass grading and are not otherwise graded so comparisons cannot be made with the Pass result printed at the base of the report.

+ WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS TO STUDENTS PARTICIPATING IN EXAMINATIONS?

The Examination –

provides an opportunity for students to be introduced to the examination procedure in a relaxed and familiar environment; provides the students with a medal and written report with positive and technical comments to assist with ongoing training; provides an opportunity for student’s to build self-esteem and a sense of achievement; gives the student’s family and teacher/s the opportunity to build confidence by congratulating the students on how wonderful they are! Future benefits - If a student ultimately aspires to a career in dance, performance, teaching or other, they may require a history and proof of previous experience and qualifications. Examination results and certificates will provide this.
