Dance is about sharing emotions and experiences, as well as technique, to collaborate and create something meaningful. Bom Funk has a fabulous team of experienced and trained teachers with a wealth of dance and performance knowledge. These teachers encourage the love of dance and create opportunities for those who share this passion. The skills a child gains from the art of Dance extend far beyond the classroom; increasing confidence, discipline, commitment, determination, flexibility, focus and leadership.
Kym Degenhart – Owner/Director, Principal Teacher
Growing up in Townsville, QLD, Kym has been teaching Dance since 1998 and has a Bachelor of Journalism, Bachelor of Arts and a Graduate Diploma in Secondary Education specialising in Dance. She holds her Australasian Dance Association (formerly FATD) Advanced Teachers Tap and Elementary Teachers Modern certificates. In 2008-2009, Kym was the Principal Tap, Jazz & Hip Hop teacher at Glenda Allen Dance Academy in Hong Kong and in 2010 she moved to Canberra to be Principal instructor at another local dance studio. Many of Kym's former students have continued on to dance professionally in Australia and overseas.
In 2011, Kym was the Arts Education tutor for Dance at the University of Canberra. She was the Head of Dance at Calwell High School (2012-2015) & at the time, ran Canberra's largest High School Dance program. In 2016, she began teaching Dance, PE & Art at Namadgi School & in 2017 will teach Dance to all Namadgi students from Preschool-Year 10. Kym has been an Ausdance ACT Board member since 2014, helping Ausdance's mission to educate, inspire and support the dance community to reach its potential as a dynamic force within the community locally and nationally.
Kym’s industry contacts are extensive as she has had a 10 year international professional dance career, most notably as a Cancan dancer at the Moulin Rouge in Paris from 2004-2006. Another career highlight was being Principal dancer and Dance Captain for Dance Encore Productions at Zenboo in Tokyo from 2007-2008. She has also lived and danced in shows in Hong Kong, Wakura Onsen (Japan) and Sydney and toured to Rome with the Moulin Rouge, USA with Australian Dance Ensemble and Edinburgh with Extensions Youth Contemporary Company. Kym has extensive promotions and modelling experience which includes shows for Coca-Cola, Hottie, Sydney Bridal Expo, Xbox, Loloma Jewelers, Fashion TV Model Awards (Paris) and Fashion Hall-of-Fame designer, Richard De Chazal.
Aside from performing, Kym was a writer for the Australian Dance teacher magazine & an Arts critic for the Townsville Bulletin. She has appeared in a number of TV shows, most notably as a host and translator for Japanese reality show, Ainori during its Australian tour and in the Fox mini-series, Secret City. She also performed on The Train of Desire (Rome) and with Penelope Cruz on France’s Hit Machine. Kym has a certificate in Event Management & worked as an assistant at The Special Event Factory working behind the scenes for clients who included Guy Sebastian, Shannon Noll and the The North Queensland Toyota Cowboys (NRL).
While Kym enjoys teaching all styles of dance to the young and old, she has a particular passion for sharing her expertise in tap and cabaret. She also specialises in teaching boys to dance and has had great success running Boys Dance programs in Queensland and the A.C.T.
Ellouise Carr - Assistant Director & Guest Teacher
Ellouise has been teaching Ballet and Contemporary/Lyrical dance since 2000. She taught RAD ballet for 12 years at Wendy Gibbs School of Ballet in Caringbah, NSW where her students received excellent results in examinations and competitions; were selected for the Australian Ballet School Interstate Program, NSW Dance Ensemble, Scholarship Program MacDonald College and Newtown School for Performing Arts; accepted to study prestigious fulltime and tertiary courses at The Australian Ballet School, The Royal Ballet School, Ev&Bow and UNSW Dance Studies. Many of her former students have gone onto professional careers with both Australian and International dance companies.
Ellouise has a Graduate Diploma in Education (Secondary) and taught Dance at Calwell High School 2012- 2015. For part of 2014 she was Acting Executive of the Arts Faculty, organsing and running many Arts & Dance events for the school. She also holds a Bachelor of Design (Hons) with a Minor in Costume and Theatre design and has designed and made costumes for many troupes, solos and eisteddfod performances. In 2016, Ellouise took up a prestigious teaching position with Monte Sant' Angelo Mercy College in Sydney. She remain as Assistant Director of Bom Funk and takes guest classes and workshops throughout the year, travelling between Sydney and Canberra when necessary. Ellouise devotes much of her time behind-the-scenes to Bom Funk's design tasks and also assists with administrate duties for the studio.
Michelle holds a Bachelor of Science and a Graduate Diploma in Education (Secondary) and has completed her Tap BAL teacher’s exam. She has been a Secondary School Teacher for the past 16 years and has taught Dance in high schools for 13 of those years. She was the Head of Dance at Calwell High School for 3 years and Acting Executive of the Arts Faculty for part of this time. In 2016, Michelle resumed her position as Head of Dance at Calwell High School.
Michelle has choreographed and work-shopped more routines than she can possibly remember and has had students perform in many events across the ACT and NSW including Rock Eisteddfod, the Youth Dance Festival and Limelight. Several of her students have continued on to have successful Dance careers of their own, attending places like The Australian Ballet School & WAAPA. Outside of high school, Michelle has taught Dance for 16 years in studios across Canberra and specialises in Tap, Jazz Tiny tots and junior classes. She is excited to have the opportunity to teach this younger age group at Bom Funk.
Brooke has been studying dance since the age of 3, studying and performing across all styles. Brooke completed exams under ATOD, RAD and Glen Wood Tap syllabi throughout her training. In 2016 Brooke completed her studies at Jason Coleman's Ministry of Dance with a Cert 4 in Dance, Cert 4 in Dance Teaching and Management and Diploma in Elite Dance Performance.
Brooke has extensive performance experience including Carnival Cruise Lines guest performer 2014; Walt Disneyworld guest performer 2014; DCI (Dance cancer initiative ) 2015; “My room jungle safari” at Crown casino 2015 and American gridiron half time performer at ANZ stadium Sydney 2016; Australian Open Kids Tennis Day Nickelodeon 2016; The Almost Eurovision Experience: Song Contest 2016; and The Big Music Quiz 2016
Hannah moved to Canberra from Queensland where she has danced for the past 20 years, specialising in Song & Dance, Ballet, Jazz, Contemporary & Lyrical styles. She has competed in local and regional Eisteddfods and championships since the age of 6. Hannah has completed her Australasian Dance Association (formally FATD) Jazz/Modern exams up to Bar to Gold Star, receiving top marks. She also completed ballet training up to RAD Advanced 2 level. She travelled through Regional Queensland with the Queensland Ballet Educational Program in 2007.
Hannah taught Song & Dance at Ann Roberts School of Dancing for 8 years and built the program from approximately 20 students to over 80 students over this time. Hannah has been a member of Extensions Youth Dance Company from 2003-2014. For 3 years Hannah has co-directed programs for Extensions, as well as taught and choreographed contemporary and lyrical classes and performances for the company. Many dancers who have trained with Extensions have moved onto professional dance careers either with professional contemporary company, Dance North or with interstate and overseas companies. Through Extensions, she has travelled to many Youth Dance Festivals including Melbourne and Horsham. Hannah has trained in silks and circus skills through LaLuna Youth Arts. She danced professionally as a cheerleader for 4 seasons of the NBL (National Basketball League) for the Townsville Crocodiles.
Hannah has performed in numerous musicals with Queensland theatre companies including, Chicago, Hairspray, Chess, Cats, Oliver, The King and I, Spamalot, Fiddler on the Roof, Joseph and his Technicolour Dream Coat, and Beauty and the Beast. Her favourite role to date was Victoria in Cats.
Bom Funk studio owner, Kym Degenhart taught Hannah dance for several years in Townsville, also working alongside Hannah’s mother, teaching Song & Dance classes. Kym is thrilled to have Hannah join the Bom Funk Faculty. 2017 will be Hannah's third year teaching at Bom Funk.
Grace has been involved in Calisthenics since she was 2 years old, taking some ballet classes in early primary school and continuing to compete in Calisthenics, solos, teams, and in state teams. Grace found her true passion when she began cadetting Calisthenics at the age of 13. Grace continued competing and cadetting and received her level one coaching qualification with the Australian Sports Commission in 2011 at the age of 18. Since then she has taught teams & solos at club level and at representative state level. In 2014 Grace was awarded the ACT Langdon Award for Young Coach of
the Year, a highly prestigious and sort-after award in the Calisthenics community.
Calisthenics is an all-round dance sport with a focus on strength and flexibility. To attain and keep a level one coaching qualification, Grace has completed courses on how to teach strength and flexibility to all ages and levels. She continues active professional development in this area.
Grace is currently at university studying Psychology. She loves teaching dance and looks forward to teaching at Bom Funk for her forth year in 2017.
Maddison has been dancing since the age of 4. She has trained in a range of styles including Tap, Jazz, Hip hop, Contemporary and Ballet. For the past 4 years, Maddie has choreographed and performed in a number of events including Australian Dance Crew Championships, Champion’s Tour, Limelight, Rock Eisteddfod and the Canberra Youth Dance Festival (‘Lest We Forget’ nominated for Australia Dance Awards Outstanding Achievement in Youth or Community Dance in 2012). She represented Calwell High School and the Canberra region at the World Supremacy Battlegrounds, an International Hip hop competition held in Sydney in 2012 & 2013, placing 3rd and 1st respectively in the High School division. She was a member of Bom Funk Mega Crew in 2014 placing 1st in the Canberra division of Battlegrounds and Highly Commended in the Brindabella Open Hip Hop. Maddie has choreographed and taught routines to Calwell Primary students for their annual ‘end of year’ concert and has been involved in numerous other events around Canberra including dancing at Spin for Canberra Centenary celebrations and at Floriade. She was awarded the CHS Most Outstanding Performer Award in 2013.
Maddie was a member of the Tap group, Tap Kix, a local group who joined Bom Funk Dance Studio in 2014. She studied choreography for 3 years and completed her teacher training under the watchful eyes of Kym Degenhart, Michelle Skerry-Wallace and Ellouise Carr. Maddie was lead teacher for JPod Crew & Gems Troupe who placed in numerous competitions and received the International Dance Teachers Association diamond for the overall Most Entertaining Group at Showcase Dance Championships (2016) as well as the 'Fierce & Fabulous' Award at Kids Artistic Revue (2016). Maddie joined the Bom Funk faculty in 2014 & looks forward to another year teaching while also pursuing Education at University.
Natasha danced at Leaps and Bounds (Victoria) from age 5 in styles Jazz and Ballet before moving to Canberra & joining Bom Funk as a student in 2012. Natasha has since trained in Jazz, Contemporary, Lyrical, Tap, Hip Hop, Ballet, Musical Theatre, Broadway Jazz, Cabaret , Acro and Pointe. She has progresed dancing through many of the Bom Funk Performance Squad Crews starting in N-R-J and then moving up into, JCrew, Assemble Monster Crew & J-Side, She continues to train as a member and performer in Diamonds and High Kix Troupes. She has taken numerous workshops to further develop her dance and performance skills with leading choreographers and teachers including Joel and Jesse Rasmussen, Rhiannon Davis, Stephan Tannos, Kurt Phelan and Sam Malseed. In 2016 she received Bom Funk's Senior Student of the Year Award and in 2015 Bom Funk's Crew Commitment Award. She danced and did make up for Talk About Hot, a dance documentary film project that unpacks global warming. Natasha received Canberra Young Citizen of the year in 2013 - Arts and Multimedia.
Natasha started assistant teaching at Bom Funk in 2015 and quickly progressed to teacher status as she displayed her talent working with children to deliver strong and creative dance classes and programs. Natasha has taught workshops for Radford College's Holiday Program and has collaborated with Bom Funk teachers to develop the studio's first Dance Summer School Holiday Program. She is a valued member of the Bom Funk Party Team, completing her Party Host training and entertains children at Bom Funk parties on a regular basis. In 2017, Natasha attended Kurt Phelan's Musical Theatre workshops as part of Ausdance ACT's Move Up Professional Development for Dance Teachers.
Natasha also owns and runs her own business, NVS Artistry and is a member of the Australian Body Art Association (ABBA) and has been accredited as an Australian Level 2 Certified Professional Painter.
Ashleigh has been studying dance in the styles of Jazz, Broadway Jazz, Hip Hop, Cabaret, and Tap since the age of two. She has been involved in a wide variety of competitions and performances including STOMP Ball, JDRF Fun Run and various outdoor public performances. Ashleigh has been a member of Bom Funk Performance Squads for many years including NRJ, High Kix Diamonds, High Kix Cabaret and Tap Kix. She has enjoyed opportunities to learn from guest choreographers including Jesse Rasmussen, Joel Rasmussen, Stephen Tannos, and Dylan Mahoney.
Ashleigh began as an Assistant teacher in 2015 and has progressively taken on more team teaching positions for Tots, Junior Jazz and Junior Ballet classes. She is excited to be involved in teaching the new Dance Kingdom program to our Tots students and loves to create fun dance activities for her students. She is currently studying Primary Education at ACU.
Noah started break dancing in 2009 when his friends at school were doing some moves they'd learnt in dance class. So jealous & inspired, Noah joined Kulture Break & quickly fell in love with Bboying. Throughout the years Noah has been taught by many different people, including members of Justice Crew and some of the world's best Bboys. He has competed in many different competitions, including Australia's biggest street dance event, Destructive Steps which has the best Bboys in the world competing in as well. From these competitions, Noah has gained experience and knowledge to pass on to his own students. Noah's ultimate goal as a teacher is to help the students become better than himself.
Noah joined the Bom Funk team in 2018 - he also works as a swim instuctor and is interested in photography & media production. His break dance short film 'Breaking through Japan' was featured in Ausdance ACT's Escalate III season.

Guest teachers & Relief Staff:
Riggs took his first dance class at the age of 6 and continued to dance for another 2 years before stopping to try other sports such as gymnastics and baseball. He got back into dancing at the age of 12 and hasn't stopped since. He trained in hip hop under the direction of Kym Degenhart at Calwell High School for 4 years. Riggs is an original member of J4 crew (established in 2013) contributing to choreography for competitions and performance pieces and commitment to the crew has seen him perform at numerous events across Canberra and NSW.
Riggs started teacher training under the watchful eyes of Kym Degenhart and Ellouise Carr in 2013. Mid 2014, he was given the opportunity to choreograph and co-teach JKix Crew to complete his level 1 and 2 teacher training certificates through Bom Funk Dance Studio. His choreography for JKix helped earn them a highly commended at Brindabella Dance Festival in 2014, the crew’s first competition and numerous places in competitions since.
Riggs has performed at a multitude of events such as Australian Dance Championships, Canberra Dance Festival, Battlegrounds, Floriade, school fetes, shows & presentation ceremonies, weddings, Ausdance Youth Dance Festival, Limelight and Brindabella Dance Festival. He was a member of Calwell High School’s crew, Academix who placed 1st in Sydney at the World Supremacy Battlegrounds in 2013. He was also a member of Bom Funk Mega Crew winning the Mega crew division in Canberra in 2014.
As a dancer, Riggs is always trying to learn new skills and broaden his versatility. He has attended workshops from names such as Ian Eastwood (HDI camp), Brian Puspos (Battlegrounds 2013), Jun Quemado, Phly crew, Jesse Rasmussen, Team Rockit and Sydney Dance Company. Riggs intends to continue taking classes and workshops so he further refines his technique and choreographic skills and broaden his experiences. In 2016, Riggs took on the position of crew leader for Bom Squad in 2016 & led the team towards numerous wins and competition places including 1st at Dancelife Unite & overall 1st at Kids Artistic Revue. He looks forward to continuing to work wih Bom Squad in 2017 and also compete and perform with J4 Crew.
Jacob has been dancing since the age of 4. He specialises in tap, urban and hip hop styles of dance and currently leads J4 Junior & JKix crews. Jacob’s love for choreography started when he joined the 2 year choreography program at Calwell High School in 2014 under the direction of Kym Degenhart. As a part of this, he choreographed routines for Step into the Limelight and Dancefest, and a highlight was his choreographic contribution towards the boy’s dance piece "The Future of Light" performed in 2015. Jacob was nominated for a Canberra Arts & Theatre Award in 2016 for 'Best Dance Performance by an Individual or Ensemble’ and has choreographed place winning routines for Bom Funk Dance Studio's J4 Junior crew.
Jacob was chosen as 1 of 7 young dancer artists to choreograph his own piece for the first ‘Escalate’ program run by Ausdance ACT in 2017. This program involved working with a number of local and national mentors to create a piece of work for a performance season held at Gorman House.
When Jacob is not performing on stage himself or coaching his dancers, he can be found backstage in theatres, working in stage lighting and sound. He is also interested in media & has filmed media projects for Bom Funk & other dance programs.
Kristiana Macleod - Guest teacher
Miss Kristi has extensive and various experience teaching and mentoring students in Canberra and overseas. As a performer and choreographer, Kristiana has performed at numerous fundraisers, events and professional shows; including travelling to LA in 2010 and 2011 to train with high-level choreographers and perform in an international choreographers ball. She competed in competitions state wide in Australia placing 1st-3rd in numerous competitions including Groove and Hip Hop International. . In April 2014, Kristiana competed, choreographed and taught with a local crew upon invitation in WOD (World of Dance) in Orlando.
Kristianna holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology as well as Supervisor Certificate in Child Care. She has a passion for working with children and currently works in Child Care and After-Hours School Care; she has also worked as a Lifeguard, Gymnastics instructor, and Community/Charity worker.
Madelane Knowles - Guest Teacher
Madelane studied hip hop, jazz, contemporary, lyrical and ballet at Bom Funk Dance Studio from the age of 9 to 19. In 2015, Madelane completed her Certificate IV in dance at Ev&Bow Full Time Dance Training Centre, under the leadership of Sarah Boulter and Lisa Bowmer; and in 2016, Madelane completed her Certificate 4 Triple Threat at Brent Street Full Time under the leadership of Lucas Newland.
Madelane has extensive live performance experience including Cronulla Sharks 67 Crew, One Ill Project 10 week program and video, Chinese New Year Dancer – Warrior, Sharp Short Theatre competition (Winner), Nuskin, Craft Operation and Suit Work. Madelane has danced in TV and Film productions including The Voice 2016, Masters Of Vision 20/20 series Short performance, Anders – I Wish You Were Mine (music video), and she was a featured dancer in the ABC program “Street Magic”.
Madelane taught at Bom Funk Dance Studio from 2011 to 2014 and we are very excited to have her returning in 2017! She will remain living in Sydney and travel to Bom Funk especially to teach each week!
Adam Hamilton– Owner/Director of High Kix Pty Ltd
Adam has extensive experience as an event manager working with Cats Eyes in Paris and The Special Event Factory in Australia. Adam was primary liaison for the company’s major client, The North Queensland Toyota Cowboys (NRL). In this role, Adam assisted in presenting game-day entertainment packages of a national standard to be presented on Fox Sports.
Adam was also the Stage Manager for artists such as Guy Sebastian, Shannon Noll, Marcia Hines, Killing Heidi, Glen Shorrick, Lee Kernigan and The Whitlams.
Adam currently works as a Trade Mark Examiner at IP Australia. He holds a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) and a Graduate Diploma in Secondary Education. He was awarded the University Medal at University of New England in 2011. Adam and Kym have been travelling the world together since 2004, before settling and marrying in Canberra in 2013.
At Bom Funk Dance Studio we wish to encourage and nurture senior students who would like to consider a career in teaching dance and choreography. We are an affiliate partner studio with DANCEstep: Student Teacher Education Program and have incorporated this teacher training and mentoring program to allow our student teachers time in the classroom with qualified teachers so they can learn how to teach and correct students safely, instruct correct technique, learn how to develop dance curriculum, integrate progressions for differing abilities and to help support their creativity development.
